    Buckeye Wellness is seeking creative faculty and staff members to serve on the Spring 2016 Amazing Race for Wellness Planning Committee. Interested individuals should verify they are available to attend the planning meetings in Newton Hall, 1585 Neil Avenue:

  5. Biometric Screening at CFAES

    On Mar. 16th  the OSU Health Plan’s RN Health Promotion Specialist(s) will be in our Ag Admin Auditorium from 8:00-2:30 to do onsite biometric health screenings.  
    Remember, if you have recently* had a physical or completed a biometric screening with your primary care provider, you can use those values to complete your Personal Health and Well-Being Assessment (PHA)
     
    Registration for our department screenings is now open.  To register, please follow the steps below:
    ·         Visit yp4h.osu.edu and click “Biometric Health Screening” from the “Start Here” drop down.
    ·         Log in with your Ohio State name.# and name.# password. 
    ·         Select “Appointments and Classes” tab at the top and highlight “Biometric Health Screening”. 

    ·         In the “Appointment Code” box type in  AA3162016. Do NOT copy and paste as this doesn’t always work to activate the code.  

    ·         Then click “Find Appointments or Classes”.  This will show only the appointments for your event in your building.  
    ·         Continue to schedule as usual.  If you experience any difficulty, please contact Customer Service at 292-4700 (you must have your Appointment Code or they will not be able to assist you).

    Once you obtain your required health values [height, weight, blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL and a blood sugar value (either glucose or A1C)], complete your PHA to receive the 2017 premium credit and up to $100 in Amazon gift cards.

    The Amazing Race for Wellness, presented by the Office of the Chief Wellness Officer and Buckeye Wellness, is a team competition based on the popular TV show. Gather a team of four Ohio State faculty, staff and their spouses or same sex partners and register here for a time slot on Wednesday, April 20.                                                                                    

  9. PHA Deadline

    PHA Deadline Fast Approaching

    Faculty and staff who were eligible for medical benefits before August 1, 2015, must complete a Personal Health and Well-Being Assessment (PHA) and biometric screening before September 30, 2015, in order to be eligible for full medical plan choice in 2016 through open enrollment. Completing these requirements will also provide faculty and staff with a $360 annual premium credit.

     

    Good news, CFAES and Wooster campus are ahead of where they were at this time last year! Check out the Leaderboard HERE to see completion rates across the university. Your Plan for Health (YP4H) helps faculty and staff meet their health goals, including having medical plan choice and a premium credit.

  10. SUMMER HEAT & WORK: TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND

    • Heat Stress: Workers who are exposed to extreme heat or work in hot environments may be at risk of heat stress. Exposure to extreme heat can result in occupational illnesses and injuries. Heat stress can result in heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or heat rashes.
    • Heat Stroke: most serious heat-related disorder. It occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature: the body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. Symptoms Include; hot, dry skin or profuse sweating, Hallucinations, Chills, Throbbing headache, High body temperature, Confusion/dizziness & Slurred speech.
    • Work site safety: First Aid

    Take the following steps to treat a worker with heat stroke:

    • Call 911 and notify their supervisor.
    • Move the sick worker to a cool shaded area.
    • Cool the worker using methods such as:
      • Soaking their clothes with water
      • Spraying, sponging, or showering them with water
      • Fanning their body

  11. Healthy Chocolate Mousse Stuffed Strawberries

    Substitute traditional chocolate-covered strawberries this Valentine's Day with these equally delicious, yet healthy and lower calorie chocolate-mousse filled treats!

     

    Ingredients:

    • 1 pound strawberries
    • 1 large avacado
    • 1/4 cup coconut milk
    • 3 Tbsp cocoa
    • 3 Tbsp honey
    • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
    • pinch sea salt

    Instructions:

    1. Wash straberries and cut a cone-shaped holeinto the tops of each one (removing the stem).
    2. In a food processor or blender, blend the remaining ingredients until very smooth.
    3. Fill the strawberries with mousse using a piping bag (if you don't have a piping bag, you can fill a ziploc bag with the mixture and cut of the corner).
    4. Keep chilled until ready to serve.
  12. Ring in the New Year with the Perfect Pork Roast and Sauerkraut

    Ingredients:

    • 4 pound pork roast - boneless and at room temperature
    • 2 pounds sauerkraut
    • 1 Tbsp caraway seeds
    • 1 cup chopped onion
    • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
    • 1 tsp kosher salt
    • 1 tsp black pepper
    • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
    • 2 Tbsp olive oil

     

    Instructions:

    1. Preheat oven to 325F.
    2. Pat the pork dry and sprinkle the entire roast with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika.
    3. Heat a large, non-stick pan over medium-high heat and add in the olive oil.
    4. When the olive oil starts to simmer, sear all sides until golden brown (approx. 5-8 minutes per side).
    5. Pour sauerkraut to cover the bottom of a 6 qt Dutch Oven dish (with lid).
    6. Sprinkle over the caraway seeds, onions, and brown sugar and add the roast to the dish.
    7. Cover tightly with the lid and bake for about 2 hours or until a meat thermometer reads 145F.
    8. Remove from the oven.
    9. Carefully remove the roast from the dish and place on a cutting board covering loosely with foil.
    10. Allow to cool for about 15 minutes before slicing.

    Note: If using a slow cooker is more your style, simply follow the directions and add your kraut and seared pork to a 6 quart crock pot. Cover and cook on low for about 8-9 hours. Easy peezy!  

  13. Skinny Berry Cheesecake Trifle

    Ingredients:

    2 cups non-fat or low-fat cottage cheese

    2 cups powdered sugar

    1 cup non-fat sour cream or non-fat plain greek yogurt

    2 teaspoons vanilla extract

    1/2 teaspoon almond extract

    1 cup whipping cream

    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    1 tablespoon sugar

    1 Angel Food cake, cut into 1" cubes

    1 quart fresh strawberries, sliced

    1 quart fresh raspberries

    2 tablespoons sugar

    3 tablespoons amaretto

    fresh berries, for garnish

     

    Instructions:

    1. Place cottage cheese in food processor and process until smooth. Add powdered sugar, sour cream (or greek yogurt), vanilla (2 tsp) and almond extracts and process until mixed well.

    2. Beat whipping cream until light peaks form. Add 1 tsp vanilla extract and 1 Tbsp sugar. Continue to beat until stiff peaks form. Fold whipped cream into cottage cheese mixture. Add cake cubes and gently fold together until cake pieces are coated with mixture.

    3. Mix strawberries, raspberries, 2 Tbsp sugar and amaretto together. Place a layer of berries in the bottom of a trifle bowl. Top with a layer of cake mixture. Repeat until dish is filled. Garnish with additional fresh berries.

  14. "Better than Potatoes" Mashed Cauliflower

    Ingredients:

    1 head of cauliflower

    2 Tablespoons cream

    1 Tablespoon light butter

    2 ounces sharp white cheddar cheese

    Salt and pepper, to taste

     

    Instructions:

    1. Clean and trim the cauliflower, breaking it into medium sized pieces. Place in a microwave-safe bowl with cream and butter. Microwave, uncovered, on high for six minutes. Stir to coat cauliflower with cream/butter mixture. Microwave for another six minutes on high.

    2. Remove from the microwave and put into a high speed food processor or blender, along with the cheese. Puree until smooth.

    3. Season with salt and pepper to tast. Enjoy!

  15. Easy, Light Gravy

    Ingredients:

    1/3 cup reduced-fat butter

    1/3 cup all-purpose flour

    3 cups reduced-Sodium turkey or chicken stock

    1 cup warm water

    1 Tablespoon dry sherry

    Fresh ground pepper, to taste

     

    Instructions:

    1. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter.

    2. Whisk in flour and cook 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in broth and water until well mixed.

    3. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.

    4. Stir in sherry and pepper.

    5. Serve warm and enjoy! (Can be made a day in advance and heated before serving)

     

     

     

  16. Healthy Peach OR Pumpkin Banana Bread

    Healthy Peach OR Pumpkin Banana Bread brings a perfect addition to your morning. Delightful and healthy!

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce
    • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
    • 1 medium peach, peeled and chopped
    • 2 eggs
    • 3 ripe bananas, mashed
    • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt

    Directions

    1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray two 8 X 4” loaf pans with non-stick cooking spray.
    2. In a large bowl whisk together the applesauce and brown sugar until smooth. Stir in the peaches and then add the eggs one at a time, stirring well between each addition. Add the bananas and oats and stir for another minute.
    3. All at once add the whole wheat flour, all purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir until everything is just combined, making sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl.
    4. Divide the batter between the two prepared pans. Bake for 30 minutes, or until a pick inserted in the center comes out clean.

    You’re just gonna follow the recipe above EXACTLY, but you will swap the 1 medium peach for 3/4 cup of canned pumpkin puree. And I definitely added 1/2 cup chopped walnuts.

  17. Steak & Peach Salad with Lemon Dressing

    Ingredients:

    • 1 1/2 pounds lean beef cut (i.e. top sirloin, flank steak, strip steak)
    • 2 teaspoons olive oil
    • 1 cup low-fat lemon yogurt
    • 1/4 cup lemon juice
    • 1/4 cup thinly sliced green onion
    • 1/2 teaspoon poppy seeds
    • 5 peaches, washedand sliced
    • Mixed salad greens
    • Salt and pepper to taste

    Instructions:

    1. Rub steakwith oil, salt and pepper. Grill over medium heat for 12 to 16 minutes to desired doneness, leaving grill lid open. Transfer steak to cutting board, tent with foil and let rest for 10 minutes.
    2. Combine yogurt, lemon juice, onion, and poppy seeds in a bowl. Cut steak across the grain into thin slices. Arrange steak and peach slices on salad greens, drizzle dressing over top. Serves 6.
  18. Avocado Deviled Eggs

    Cut the fattening mayonnaise and replace it with avacado for a healthy spin on this Easter classic!

    Ingredients:

    • 8 eggs, hardboiled
    • 1ripe avacado
    • 1/3 cup light sour cream
    • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
    • salt and pepper
    • paprika
    • Seasoned salt (optional)

    Instructions:

    1. Hard boil your eggs. Remove shells, cut each egg in half lengthwise, and scoop out yolks. Reserve yolks in a bowl to the side.
    2. Peel and pit your avacado andadd it to your bowl of yolks. Use a handheld blender or food processor to puree together until smooth and creamy. Add sour cream, lemon, and salt and pepper to taste. Mix until smooth.
    3. Spoon yolk mixture into a piping bag with a big star tip. Pipe into the middle of each egg white. Sprinkle with a bit of paprika and seasoned salt andenjoy! Keep them covered in the refrigerator until ready to serve. It is best to serve them the same day that you make them because they do start to brown the next day.

  25. Be One in a Million Hearts

    In honor of February being American Heart Month, the national Consortium for Building Healthy Academic Communities is challenging you to join the Million Hearts initiative and help prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.

    During the month of February, you can participate in the BHAC National Challenge by educating your students and fellow faculty and staff on the ABCSs of cardiovascular disease. To do so, visit go.osu.edu/millionhearts and select the BHAC Million Hearts Challenge. You'll complete an online educational module that will empower you to educate others on the importance of heart health.

    One in four American children and adolescents suffers from a mental health disorder that interferes with functioning at home, at school and with peers. And yet, less than 25 percent of affectes children receive any treatment. If left untreated, mental health problems can lead to serious, harder to treat chronic illnesses. Join Ohio State's Chief Wellness Officer Dr. Bernadette Melynk for a presentation and discussion on this important topic via webcast.

  41. Take a Lap Around the Oval & Hit the Road with the Buckeyes-September 11th

    Football season is just around the corner, which also marks the arrival or crisp fall days and the YP4H 6th annual all-campus walking challenge! Please mark your calendar for Friday, September 11th when we will officially kick-off Hit the Road with the Buckeyes at our Take a Lap around teh Oval event form 11:30am-1:30pm. Event details are still being confirmed, so be on the lookout for more information coming soon. In the meantime, start putting together your 4-6 person teams and get ready to 'Walk like a Champion!'

  42. Biometric Screening

    On Sept. 18th,   the OSU Health Plan’s Health Promotion Specialist(s) will be in our department, Ag Auditorium from 8:00am - 2:40pm to do onsite biometric health screenings.

    Remember, if you have recently* had a physical or completed a biometric screening with your provider, you can use those values to complete your Personal Health and Well-Being Assessment (PHA).  Please use this provider form in lieu of having an on campus screening.

    Completing your PHA, with all of the required values (height, weight, blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL and a blood sugar value (either glucose or A1C)), by September 30, 2015 will allow you to receive 2016 medical plan choice and premium credit.   Also, when you participate in challenges to help you achieve and maintain your health and well-being goals, you can earn up to $125 in amazon gift cards.

    Registration is now open online for this date.  In order to register for your screening, go to www.yp4h.osu.edu.  Click on “Start Here”.  Then click “Schedule a biometric screening”.  Log in with name.#.  Select “Appointments and Classes” tab on top.  Highlight “Biometric Health Screening”.  In the box that states “Appointment Code” please  type  in   AG9182015   Do NOT copy and paste as this doesn’t always work to activate the code.  Then click “Find Appointments or Classes”.   This will show only the appointments for your event in your building.  Continue to schedule as usual.  If you experience any difficulty, please contact Customer Service at 292-4700, but you must have your Appointment Code or they will not be able to assist you.

  45. Sign Up for the 2015 American Heart Association Heart Walk

    Form a team for the 2015 American Heart Association Heart Walk or join my team to walk this year on August 22 at the Columbus Commons. Last year we had over 1,300 people on the Ohio State team and this year we hope to have 2,000. There is no cost to sign up and all participants receive a team Ohio State t-shirt to wear the day of the Heart Walk. Our fundraising goal this year is $100,000. All monies raised from the walk go to the American Heart Association. Fundraising is encouraged but not required. Email Natalie Brown at Natalie.Brown2@osumc.edu with questions.
